Italic for Beginners
The Italic hand is one of the most versatile scripts in a calligrapher’s repertoire.
In this 2-day workshop the focus will be on the minuscule or lowercase letters.
We will begin by learning about the origins of the script in Renaissance Italy and looking at the characteristics of Italic. Understanding stroke direction and basic letter shapes will provide the foundation for creating beautiful consistent letters. There will be mini projects for your practice along the way, using words and short quotes in simple layouts. By the end of the 2 days your practice sheets will form a book - a memento and reference, marking the start of your Italic journey.
The workshop will be pitched to beginners, but if you are wishing to revisit and hone your Italic hand, additional exercises will be provided for participants with prior experience.
