Italic for Beginners with Deirdre Hassed

Registration closing date : 27th September

This is a two-day in-person workshop.

Italic for Beginners
from $150.00

The Italic hand is one of the most versatile scripts in a calligrapher’s repertoire.

In this 2-day workshop the focus will be on the minuscule or lowercase letters.

We will begin by learning about the origins of the script in Renaissance Italy and looking at the characteristics of Italic. Understanding stroke direction and basic letter shapes will provide the foundation for creating beautiful consistent letters. There will be mini projects for your practice along the way, using words and short quotes in simple layouts. By the end of the 2 days your practice sheets will form a book - a memento and reference, marking the start of your Italic journey.

The workshop will be pitched to beginners, but if you are wishing to revisit and hone your Italic hand, additional exercises will be provided for participants with prior experience.

In this workshop, we will learn how to draw the quill and the bird in a rapid way using whole arm movement. • Material List for Offhand Bird Flourishing Workshop

Please note that materials are not INCLUDED in the workshop fee.

    Penholder:

A straight penholder that can fit the following nib(s)

    Nibs:

    • Gillott 303

    • Hunt 101

    • Leonardt Principal EF

When we do offhand flourishing, we need to use a very flexible nib so that fine hairline can be created, as well as a rather thick shade when pressure is applied. The above 3 nibs are good for offhand flourishing. Either brand is fine, but you will need to bring at least 3 nibs to the class, the more the better. If you have other pointed nibs at home, or whatever you normally use for copperplate calligraphy, bring them to the class so that you can test them out for bird flourishing.

    Ink:

Walnut ink (this is what Cyrus will be using in class), Pelikan ink, Sumi ink, Kuretake Vemilion ink, Higgins Eternal, Robert Oster ink, Bister ink, Pearl Ex or watercolour. Any ink that is smooth enough to flow throw the nib is fine, fountain pen ink is also suitable for this workshop. Please note that, inks like Dr Ph Martin’s bleedproof white, Iridescent ink, Spectralite ink are tooooo thick for this offhand flourishing (unless you thin it). Dr Ph Martin’s TECH or BOMBAY are suitable though.

    Paper:

A4 size paper, the papers need to be smooth and accept ink well! You will need at least a 50 sheets of bleed proof paper. Please also bring about 20 - 50 sheets of normal laser/inkjet copy paper

A few black or any coloured card stocks in A4 or A3 size

    Other basic materials:

HB or 2B Pencil (not mechanical pencil), Pencil sharpener, Straight ruler 30cm and Eraser

Paper towel and a glass of water for cleaning the nib

    Optional - Gilder’s bridge or Artist’s bridge

Optional - Drawing glove, if you normally wear it when you do calligraphy/copperplate

    Reference book:

Ornate Pictorial Calligraphy by E.A. Lupfer

This is an excellent reference book for bird flourishing, includes over 150 examples bird flourishing examples. You can get this book from Dymocks or Amazon.

One-stroke letters with Decoration -Yukimi Annand (Zoom class)

One-stroke letters with Decoration -Yukimi Annand (Zoom class)

In this workshop we will play with line, shape and movement by creating one-stroke letters based on the Roman alphabet. Our form development will be contemporary rather than traditional, and we will play with decorative patterns and colors in harmony.

The first half of the class, we will make variations of one-stroke letters based on Roman capitals with pencils and fine-line markers. Then we will move to a ruling pen and other tools to draw/paint. We will try to get a nice balance on each letter, and write words and text with rhythm and movement. We will apply different decorative patterns and borders based on historical and nature forms on the letters.

In The second half of the class, we will play designing one stroke letters with different letterforms including one that is influenced by works of Hans Schmidt. We will exercise creating some variations of one stroke letters and write words with them. We will apply colors and gold on the letters and finalize one to two words or a text block on good quality paper.
